March 2010
Ground Breaking Ground breaking ceremonies for the westward expansion were held on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. Along with the ground breaking ceremonies, the new name and logo for the hospital were unveiled. Oktibbeha County Hospital will now be OCH Regional Medical Center. OCH has long served patients in seven surrounding counties and now the name reflects this fact. Construction will begin immediately. February 2010 Brasfield and Gorrie General Contractors from Birmingham, Alabama, has been awarded the contract for the Oktibbeha County Hospital expansion and renovation. Bids were opened on February 3, 2010, by the Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors. A total of nine general contractors submitted bids and after review Brasfield and Gorrie was determined to have the lowest and best bid. At the Board of Supervisors' meeting on February 21, 2010, the supervisors approved the recommendation from Dean and Dean Architects and the Oktibbeha County Hospital Board of Trustees to accept the bid from Brasfield and Gorrie. Brasfield and Gorrie has an extensive history in medical and hospital construction. The company was incorporated in 1964 and has been involved in healthcare construction for many years. They are one of the largest construction companies in the southeast. Some of Brasfield and Gorrie's more recent projects include a $42 million project at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, a $55 million project at Mississippi Baptist West Tower in Jackson, Mississippi, and a $41.6 million project at St. Vincent's in Birmingham, Alabama. Many subcontractors from the surrounding area have been selected by Brasfield and Gorrie to perform work associated with the project at OCH. The duration of the construction/renovation is projected to be 686 calendar days. Phase I, which is the new patient tower, is scheduled to be open in July 2011. Phase II is the renovation of the existing building and is scheduled for completion in February 2012. November 2009 Bids are schedule to be opened on January 21, 2010. If all goes as planned, we will be breaking ground for the new tower in February. August 2009 Architectural plans for the project are being developed with design drawings about 95% complete. Staff members continue to meet weekly with the team from Dean and Dean. The Engineers have completed bore testing and are in the process of designing footings and foundation plans. We are still on schedule for an early January bid date. June 2009 The process for issuing a certificate of need for the project, by the Mississippi State Board of Health, has cleared the first phase of the process with no objections filed. It will now go into the last phase of approval. It is expected the certificate will be issued sometime in the month of August. April 2009 The Certificate of Need (CON) application has been deemed complete by the State Department of Health. The application has been entered into the April - June 2009 review cycle. The department of health will accept written comments, for or against the proposal, from members of the public, or affected persons no later than May 1, 2009. The department can make its ruling after May 1, 2009, if there are no requests for a public hearing. March 2009 The County Board of Supervisors has hired the legal firm of Butler, Snow, O'Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC, as bond counsel. This firm is in the process of getting the bonds certified with the state bond attorney. Dean & Dean in Jackson, Mississippi, has been selected as the architect for this project. They are in the process of working with the board of supervisors, hospital administration, and the attorneys to get the Certificate of Need filed with the Mississippi State Department of Health. The architects are working on design drawings and are currently meeting with employees and staff physicians in speciality areas impacted by the construction and renovation for input in the design of this project.
